Anand Tech Talks

Hello guys, it's been a while since I posted something on my blog. So, Let's start with something which is trending right now in the smartphone market. As you would have guessed it from the title of this blog, I am going to talk about, is the 18:9 aspect ratio worth the hype? So, let's get started. First, the screen aspect ratio has nothing to do with the size of the screen. The length of the diagonal represents the size of the screen. The aspect ratio of the screen is the Length of the screen: Width of the Screen. Samsung A8 2018 What is wrong with the good old 16:9 screen?   -- Well quite honestly there's is nothing wrong with the 16:9 scaled displays. We can get a bezel-less design with them too. But like everything in the tech industry aspect ratio of a mobile screen has to change too. Actually, most of the video content you see on your phone or your computer is on 16:9 scaling. So, why the change?     As I said everything in the Tech Indu...

A couple of years back, Google with some companies like Micromax, Karbonn and Lava released a series of smartphones which were named Android one. It was the first article on my blog ;). I liked the device as the specifications justified the price tag and it came with a promise of regular updates from Google. Although the phones did not become popular but they managed to change the smartphone market. And now Google and Xiaomi have joined hands to relaunch the Android one brand with a price tag of around 15k. Let's see if the phone is worth the hype!  First, let's take a look at its specifications: Display Features Display Size 5.5 inch Resolution 1920 x 1080 Pixels Resolution Type Full HD GPU Adreno 506 Display Type IPS Other Display Features Contrast Ratio: 1000:1, 2.5D Glass, Metal Body Os & Processor Features Operating System Android Nougat 7.1.2 Processor Type Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 64 bit Octa Core 2GH...

GST stands for GOODS AND SERVICES TAX. It is an indirect tax levied on goods and services. Under this scheme goods and services are taxed at following rates, 0%, 5%, 18%, 28%.  Before the implementation of GST  people were confused on how it is gonna impact their shopping bill. Now that it is in effect, let's see its impact on the gadgets and related services market. Earlier the tax rate on smartphones was nearly 13.5% but after GST it's 12%. All parts and components of the smartphone come under this category. There is no remarkable change in the wireless services like transmission and reception of voice and communication, landline telephone sets and wired connection due to GST. If we talk about smartphones that are imported, they are gonna get costlier as the government is gonna impose a 10% customs duty on and indirectly it is gonna benefit India as manufacturers will then consider establishing their manufacturing units in India that will create...

How is it going folks, Welcome to another article on " 7 most expensive gadgets available for purchase" in 2017. Some of these are just for luxury and rely on aesthetics to stand out of the crowd while some of these have overkill features in their segment. So, let's get started. It's been a long time since I posted something on my blog. But from now on I'll be posting stuff regularly on this blog.   So what is Dolby Digital ? >  Formerly known as AC-3 is a digital audio coding technique that reduces the amount of data               needed to produce high quality sound. It has five full bandwidth channels i.e. front left , front right , center , surround left and surround right, due to which it creates full surround sound experience for the listener. This multichannel system is referred as 5.1 channel. Because everyone doesn't have the proper equipment to utilize the 5.1 channel sound, it's developer included a downmixing feature that ensure that it is compatible with any sound device. Now a days we can find various gadgets with dolby digital(or Atmos) feature like laptops and smartphones. Another variant : There is another variant of Dolby audio i.e. Dolby TrueHD . TrueHD,  while still using...

Smartphones have been evolving so fast that now we don't even think about using computer at first for many tasks. Let's get one thing straight, Mhz/Ghz and no. of cores do not indicate the relative performance of two arbitrary processors. Earlier they used to be the indicators for the performance but now when we have mobile devices showing similar nos. sometimes higher, it has become really confusing. I am going to talk about all this ahead in this article. Basically: as the Thermal Design Power increases, the "scale" of the CPU increases. Think of the "scale" between a bicycle, a car, a truck, a train, and a C-17 cargo airplane. Higher TDP means larger scale. The MHz  may or may not  be higher, but other factors like the complexity of the microarchitecture, the number of cores, the branch predictor's performance, the amount of cache, the number of execution pipelines, etc. all tend to be higher on larger-scale processors. Now as fabrication size ...
