Is 18:9 screen ratio worth the hype ?

Hello guys, it's been a while since I posted something on my blog. So, Let's start with something which is trending right now in the smartphone market. As you would have guessed it from the title of this blog, I am going to talk about, is the 18:9 aspect ratio worth the hype?

So, let's get started.

First, the screen aspect ratio has nothing to do with the size of the screen. The length of the diagonal represents the size of the screen. The aspect ratio of the screen is the Length of the screen: Width of the Screen.

What is wrong with the good old 16:9 screen?

-- Well quite honestly there's is nothing wrong with the 16:9 scaled displays. We can get a bezel-less design with them too. But like everything in the tech industry aspect ratio of a mobile screen has to change too. Actually, most of the video content you see on your phone or your computer is on 16:9 scaling. So, why the change?

As I said everything in the Tech Industry has to change and this year the aspect ratio and the dual camera segment is the sweet spot that every company wants to hit.

Advantages of the new ratio:

-- Well as the length of the screen increases, you can view more content in one go.
-- The multiwindow feature will work better with the longer display.
-- And the complementary almost bezel-less design you get with that screen.

There is a downside to it right now too. Most of the video content you view is 16:9 so you will be greeted with a black bar on the side even on full screen. Companies offer the screen stretch feature to eliminate the black bar, but it results in a little cropping of the video.

Also, you don't get the standard 1080p or a 720p display with these phones. So, the chipset makers have to provide support for these non-standard resolutions that are coming with these phones on the hardware and the firmware level. So, it's not like an OEM can put an 18:9 display on any phone. It has to choose which chipset to use on those devices.

So, the final question is the new aspect ratio worth the hype?
-- Well it depends on the type of user you are. If you are into the multiwindow feature and you view written content more then this is for you. If you don't like tall displays or you have small palm then you'll have a hard time using these phones with one hand. And I don't think companies will go for this ratio with smaller phones as it's not ergonomic. The change in resolution doesn't make much of a difference.

These phones are gaining more and more popularity day by day and manufacturers are launching more and more devices featuring these displays. Comment if you have got one too.
